Can We Get (it) Together? AIDS and Identity Politics?
AIDS is an instructive disease in that it offers an opportunity
to deconstruct the identity politics at the heart of our
postmodern era, but more often than not bolsters these same
politics. This talk examines how identity politics operate
insofar as the conception of ?AIDS subjects.? Tuesday, March
6, 2007, 4-6 p.m. Eggers Public Events Room (220). Chris
Bell joins us from the Department of English at Towson
University.

Call for Papers, 2nd LGBT Symposium: Queer Exoticism
|
|
|
Our search for the exotic has always been a veiled
attempt to find our hidden or not-yet-determined identity.
Often the foreigner symbolizes s/he who would be different
but who is, in fact, that element of ourselves we seek to (re)
discover. Looking abroad, then, is a commonplace metaphor
for looking inside. Foreigners in literature and cinema
commonly stand for the queer aspects we secretly hope to
see represented. How does gazing at the foreigner or being
the foreigner evoke queer desires that are often left
unspoken? Please e-mail 500-700-word proposals to David
A. Powell, Director LGBT Studies Program
(david.powell@hofstra.edu) by 1st May 2007. Also,
innovative conference papers will be solicited for future
publication in a potential edited volume.

Pre-registration for the "Feminism, Sexuality and the Return of Religion"
|
|
|
Pre-registration for the "Feminism, Sexuality and the
Return of Religion" conference has been particular brisk thus
far and there is some chance
that we will need to close preregistration at some point
before the dates of the actual conference
(April 26-28), as the seating in the Sheraton ballroom is
limited. May I encourage you to please preregister
immediately if you intend to attend the conference
(Visit: http://thecollege.syr.edu/admin/pcr-conference/
index.htm for details, including on line preregistration). While
the registration fee is
waived for all Syracuse faculty and students, you still need to
preregister.
