Querying Globalization: Sexual Subjectivities, Development, and the Governance of Intimacy

Amy Lind, Associate Professor of Women's Studies, University of Cincinnati, April 2, 2007, 4:00 p.m., 100 Eggers Hall

This paper addresses how sexual subjectivities are produced, understood, and imagined in the global development industry. I argue that this industry serves as an important site for the institutionalization of neoliberal policies and the broader process of global restructuring. By examining how sexual subjectivities are represented in narratives and institutional practices of development, I demonstrate the paradoxes of defining queer sexualities in an era of transnational production and neoliberal governance. I draw out the implications of this research for scholarly and activist strategies that aim to resist normativities produced and/or accentuated by restructuring processes.

The Aggressives (Daniel Peddle, 2005) film screening, Wednesday, March 28th

A striking and illuminating documentary that explores the subculture of New York lesbians living as 'aggressives.' These women range from pretty tomboys to the blatantly butch, boldly creating their own identities outside of society's established sexual categories. Stripped of pretense, they lead us to fashion shoots and prison cells to reveal their work lives, love lives, and social lives, including the underground ball scene where lesbians compete for lead "AG" status.

Date: March 28, 2007 , Time: 5-7 pm , Location: 304 Tolley

Asian American Gay, Lesbian, and Bisexual Persons Attitudes and Experiences Survey

We are a culturally diverse research team (one lesbian and one Asian American) conducting an empirical study examining attitudes, feelings, and experiences associated with being an Asian American who experiences attraction to members of the same sex. Historically, researchers have neglected the lives of Asian American gay, lesbian, and bisexual persons, and very little research has looked specifically at attitudes, feelings, and experiences that sexual minority persons have based on their race and sexual orientation. To be eligible for this study, you must be an Asian/Asian American who is at least 18 years old, has experienced same- sex attraction, and currently resides in the United States. The survey is anonymous, and takes about 20 minutes to complete. SUNY Albany currently doing research on transgender people and passport use

Seeking transgender people who are willing to share their experiences in traveling internationally. I am currently studying the use of passports by transgender (including transsexuals) individuals and any difficulty, discrimination, or harassment, they have experienced in using their passport at the United States border when traveling internationally.

I hope to gain insight into the process and experience of the use of identity documents for transgender people and how transgender people mediate their self identity, self presentation, and legal identity. Must be 18 years of age or older to participate. If you are interested in taking part in this study, please email me at transpassport@gmail.com
