WASHINGTON, DC -- By a vote of 237-180, the U.S. House of Representatives passed H.R. 1592 after an hour of debate. We now await action in the Senate on an identical bill (S.1105). The hate crimes bill would allow the federal government to provide assistance to local law enforcement in the investigation and prosecution of bias crimes. In addition to continuing coverage of categories already in the federal law, the bill would add the protected categories of gender identity, sexual orientation, gender and disability.
