Final Film of the Semester
Little Miss Sunshine
(2006) Time: 7:00
pm Day: Monday, December
3rd Location: Watson
Theater
Meet the Hoovers, an
Albuquerque clan riddled with depression,
hostility, and the tattered remnants of the
American Dream; despite their flakiness, they
manage to pile into a VW van for a weekend trek to
L.A. in order to get moppet daughter Olive
(Abigail Breslin) to the Little Miss Sunshine
beauty pageant. Stars Greg Kinnear and Toni
Collette (he¹s desperately seeking to become a
self-help authority) as the parents, Alan Arkin as
a grandfather all too willing to give uproariously
inappropriate advice to a sullen teenage grandson
(Paul Dano), and a subdued Steve Carell as a
jilted gay professor on the verge of
suicide.
This film series calls into
question popular culture representations of people
who may not conform to the ³typical²
representation put forth by the dominant culture.
Join us for food and lively discussion of each of
the films in the series.

R.A.P.E. Center seeks volunteer advocates
|
|
|
The Syracuse University
Office of Prevention Services' Rape: Advocacy,
Prevention and Education (R.A.P.E.) Center is
seeking applications and nominations for volunteer
advocates to attend training in Spring
2008.
The R.A.P.E. Center provides
access to 24-hour, year- round support and
assistance for SU and ESF students who have been
sexually assaulted. The R.A.P.E. Center works in
collaboration with Vera House, Inc., to provide
services to SU and ESF students. Volunteer
advocates provide crisis response services
evenings, nights and weekends, and are critical to
the Center's ability to provide these services
after hours.
The Center is seeking SU and
ESF staff and faculty to join the volunteer
advocate program. The deadline for applying to
become an advocate is January 7, 2008. Applicants
will be contacted immediately upon receipt of
applications to schedule an interview. Volunteer
advocates must complete the initial training,
conducted in partnership with Vera House, Inc.,
during two weekends in late January-early February
2008. Volunteer advocates are expected to
participate on the Vera House on-call schedule in
order to complete their training.
The R.A.P.E. Center is
looking for staff and faculty members who are
responsible, sensitive to the needs of others, and
nonjudgmental. Advocates are expected to listen
actively to those in crisis to understand how to
best be of assistance and to present all options
without attempting to influence decisions.
Advocates must uphold the confidentiality and
respect the dignity of clients at all
times.
To apply or nominate a potential applicant, or
to request a position description and application,
contact Janet Epstein, associate director, Office
of Prevention Services, at 443-7098 or
epsteinj@syr.edu.

A trans identified student
wins Homecoming
A transgender student elected
homecoming king at Pasadena City College was
nearly denied his throne because of, his
earrings.
Andrew Gomez, a 24-year-old
transitioning from female to male, ran for
homecoming king to set an example for other gay,
lesbian, and transgender students, according to
the San Gabriel Valley Tribune. He was surprised
when he won, and apparently so was the college's
homecoming committee. It ruled that Mr. Gomez
could not serve as king because of his pierced
ears.
When students lodged charges
of discrimination, however, the committee reversed
its decision. And Mr. Gomez got to be king for a
day after all.
This story was taken from
the Chronicle.
