Hormones prove beneficial for UAlbany
Student |
|
an article from timesunion.com
At age 20, Dan Foerste is
going through puberty again, this time as a male.
His voice is deepening, mild acne mottles his
face, and he has wisps of facial hair -- all
products of the testosterone injections he's been
taking for the past six months.
Born biologically female, the
second-eldest of six children, Foerste says he has
never felt right in his female body. When his
elementary-school class was divided into boys and
girls for games, ending up in the latter group
made him feel mispigeonholed, like a category
mistake had been made.

HIV on the Ride among Gay New Yorkers
|
|
a medpagetoday.com
article
Over the past six years, the total number of
new HIV diagnoses among gay men under 30 has risen
33%, from 374 in 2001 to 499 in 2006, according to
Thomas Frieden, M.D., the city's health
commissioner.
"We're headed in the wrong direction," Dr.
Frieden said. "Unless young men reduce the number
of partners they have, and protect themselves and
their partners by using condoms more consistently,
we will face another wave of suffering and death
from HIV and AIDS."

PostDoc Opportunity at Duke University

|
Trasnational Sexualities
sponsors a PostDoc at Duke
The Program in Women's
Studies at Duke University is offering two
residential postdoctoral fellowships for the
2008-09 academic year to scholars engaged in the
transnational study of sexuality. We are
particularly interested in projects that
reorganize received geographic conceptions of
sexuality by investigating alternative circuits,
zones, and regions. We welcome empirical, textual,
and theoretical projects from a variety of fields
and periods. Topics might include South-South
links, transitional regions, critical area
studies, post-socialist contexts, European or non-
European empires, or emerging spaces of erotic
sociality that cross or evade national borders.
The intent of the postdoctoral program for
2008-2009 is to foster conversations among Women's
Studies, the Program in Sexuality Studies, and
allied fields at Duke. Proposals should therefore
be interdisciplinary and reflect familiarity with
feminist theory, sexuality studies, and critical
race and postcolonial theories.
Postdoctoral fellows will be
included in a faculty- graduate seminar on these
themes and are expected to be in residence at the
Women's Studies Program for the academic year.
Fellows will teach one course related to their
scholarship.
The fellowship includes a
stipend, health insurance, office space, and
clerical support. Applicants should be no more
than five years past the PhD, and should have the
PhD in hand by May 2008. Applications received by
November 28, 2007 will be guaranteed
consideration. Send C.V., 5-page project proposal,
writing sample (25 pages), 1-page course proposal
(undergraduate), and 3 letters of recommendation
to: Ranjana Khanna, Director, Women's Studies, Box
90760, 210 East Duke Building, Durham NC, 27708.
Our program information is available at www.duke.edu/womstud.

Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer.
