Film Series at SU

Join the Beyond Compliance Coordinating Committee For the Fall 2007 Disability Film Series!

This film series calls into question popular culture representations of people who may not conform to the ³typical² representation put forth by the dominant culture. Join us for food and lively discussion of each of the films in the series.

October 1: Dance Me to My Song (1998)
Rolf de Heer¹s "Dance Me to My Song" is an extraordinary Australian work written by Heather Rose, who has cerebral palsy and communicates through a computer and voice synthesizer. As the film opens, she¹s at the mercy of a stupid and cruel "caregiver" who neglects and insults her. Using her motorized wheelchair and her lively intelligence, she tries to figure a way out of her dilemma. In the opening shot, the heroine seems hopeless and alien. By the end, we identify more with her than with the ³normals² in the story. Featured Presenter: Raven James, Post Doctoral Fellow, Center on Human Policy at SU.

2007 Hispanic Writing Project

The Association of Neighbors Concerned for Latino Advancement (ANCLA), and CNY Latino proudly announce a Hispanic Writing Project
The theme this year is, "Proud to be ... "

ANCLA and CNY Latino are encouraging the Latino community to participate in the 1st writing project to answer the statement "Proud to be". The writing can be written in English or Spanish, communicated through song, poetry or story.

The length is determined by the entry's grade level. Elementary student's entry should be between 100 - 150 words, Middle School between 150 - 250 words, High School between 300 - 500 words and adult entries between 300 - 500 words

The event will be a year long celebration. Each month a committee of community, businesses and parents will select one entry from each category to be a winner of that category as well as being published in the CNY Latino newspaper. We will ask community agencies / companies in the area to display entries in their lobbies. The first winner will be published in February 2008, the 4th anniversary edition of CNY Latino newspaper.

The mission of the writing project is to share with the Syracuse Community all the positive expressions by Latinos

ImageOut

Opportunities for Students

With a new crop of students arriving every fall, and with all the ensuing activities at the start of the academic year, its easy for college students to be unaware of this great film festival going on in downtown Rochester - its now the largest film festival of any kind in the state and the largest LGBT cultural event (outside of NYC of course). They need a means of getting the word out, and are trying a new program this year that revolves around on-campus volunteers - ImageOut Liaisons. In order to best attract students as audience members, it makes sense for them to try and attract a student from each college to volunteer as a liaison, who would promote the festival on campus, report to ImageOut about their progress, and offer advice on novel strategies for reaching interested groups and individuals.

For more information, or to submit your name as a potential Liaison, contact Paul Allen at pdallen73@gmail.com.

Youth Project Film Series
ImageOut would like to take this opportunity to remind you about their YOUTH PROJECT. This series of films is selected specifically for their appeal to LGBT youth and their friends and supporters. Tickets for these films are FREE to anyone under the age of 21. This year they are also offering a $2 discount to college students for regular priced programs outside of the Youth Project.

This year they are also excited to again be hosting a pre-festival youth event at the GAGV Youth Center located on 875 East Main Street in Rochester . This event will take place on Sunday September 30th from 3:00 - 5:00 pm. Along with the opportunity to see a great movie, food and prizes will be offered, and tickets will be available for the festival's youth films.

Now for our regularly scheduled events ...

Wednesday Night: Open Doors @ 7:30
