History of the Foundation Awards
The Foundation Awards were established in 2003 to recognize individuals, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity, whose personal or professional lives have positively affected the LGBT community in a significant way. The name "Foundation Award" is itself significant, because it reminds us of the many heroes of the gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender movements who have paved the way for us. Just as a building needs a strong foundation to stand against the elements, our movement needs heroes to guide it course.
A recipient is chosen in each of seven categories: undergraduate student, graduate student, faculty member, university staff member, university department or organization, community member (added in 2004), alumni (added in 2005) and community youth member (added in 2006). We look for individuals who have made a significant contribution to the LGBT community at Syracuse University or in the greater Syracuse area, and who work toward a more positive environment for the LGBT community, and us all.
